There are nearly eight million animals in shelters who are waiting for a home. Not everyone is able to adopt an animal. Some people already have too many animals in their home. Others are simply not in a position to adopt an animal due to a lack of time, space in their home or finances. However, there are ways that you can help shelter animals without adopting them. Since your actions can make a huge difference in the lives of shelter animals, we’ve put together a list of the best five ways to help:

1. Drive

Thousands of people have driven animals to shelters in recent years. Rescue organizations are always looking for drivers. You can directly save an animal's life by taking him or her to a shelter. This type of work is quite flexible, which means a shelter will appreciate any amount of time you can dedicate to it.

2. Foster Home

You may not be able to permanently take in an animal. However, if you are able to temporarily care for an animal, you may want to consider being a foster pet parent. Almost every rescue organization needs foster pet parents. This can provide animals with a much higher quality of life and allow shelters to do even more.

3. Volunteer

Most shelters are open every day. That is why they are in need of volunteers. Even if you are only able to volunteer a few hours out of the week, you can still make a difference. You can do things like feed the animals, walk dogs and bathe them. You can also take care of clerical tasks such as answering the phones or mailing applications.

4. Donate

You may not have the time to volunteer at a shelter. It can be difficult to find the time to volunteer if you work full-time or care for a family. However, you can always help shelters by donating to them. Not only can you donate money, but you can also donate other resources. Toys, food bowls, water bowls, grooming tools, pet beds and quality food are examples of some of the things that shelters often need. You can always ask an animal rescue organization about what is needed the most.

5. Offer Specialized Skills

If you are good at things like fundraising, marketing or design, you can use your skills to help a shelter. Using your skills to help a shelter will not only benefit the organization, it can also help you by giving you solid experience and another reference to put on your resume.

Regardless of whether you drive, volunteer, serve as a foster pet parent, use your specialized skills or donate, any action you take can help make a difference in the lives of shelter animals.
